How to Read a Proprietary Blend: The Label Math Anyone Can Do
A proprietary blend shows one total weight and lists its ingredients from heaviest to lightest, without single amounts. Divide the total by the ingredient's place in the list to get the most it could weigh. In GlucoZen's 200 mg blend, gymnema sits eighth, so it is at most 25 mg per serving, far below the 1,200 mg a day LiverTox lists as typical.

The basics
What is a proprietary blend on a supplement label?
A proprietary blend is a group of ingredients listed under one name and one total weight. You see what is inside, but not how much of each.
FDA's labeling guide sets the format. The blend must be called a "Proprietary Blend" or a similar name, with its total weight on the same line. Its ingredients go underneath, in descending order by weight (FDA, Labeling guide).
That order is the key. With a total and a list, you can work out the most any one ingredient could weigh.
Nutrients with a Daily Value, such as chromium, cannot hide in a blend. They must be listed on their own, with their amounts (FDA, Labeling guide).
The rules
What must a proprietary blend label show?
Here is each rule, checked against a real panel.
| What the rule asks for | On the GlucoZen label |
|---|---|
| A name such as "Proprietary Blend" | "Proprietary Herbal Blend" |
| Total weight on the same line | 200 mg per 1 mL serving |
| Ingredients in descending order by weight | 22 ingredients, from maca root extract down to L-carnitine |
| Nutrients with a Daily Value listed separately | Chromium (as chromium picolinate) 0.7 mcg, 2% DV |
| Amount of each blend ingredient | Not published |
The full panel, line by line, is on the Supplement Facts page.
Step by step
How do you read a proprietary blend in five steps?
No lab needed. A total, a list and simple division.
Find the blend line
Look for the words Proprietary Blend, or a similar name, with one total weight on the same line.
Count the ingredients
Count every ingredient listed under the blend. Divide the total weight by that count to get the average.
Use the order
Ingredients run from heaviest to lightest. Divide the total by an ingredient's place to get the most it could weigh.
Multiply by servings
Check how many servings a day the directions give and multiply each ceiling by that number.
Compare with studied doses
Hold each ceiling up against the doses used in research. If it falls far short, the ingredient is there in name only.
Ceilings are our math from the label, not a lab test.
Worked example
How much of each ingredient could be in GlucoZen's blend?
Each bar is the most that ingredient could weigh in one 1 mL serving.
- 1Maca root extract9 to 200 mg
- 2Grape seed extract0 to 100 mg
- 3Guarana seed extract0 to 67 mgA natural caffeine source; caffeine amount not printed
- 4African mango fruit extract0 to 50 mg
- 5Eleuthero root extract0 to 40 mg
- 6Astragalus root extract0 to 33 mg
- 7Green tea leaf extract0 to 29 mgAlso contains caffeine
- 8Gymnema leaf extract0 to 25 mgThe herb most tied to blood sugar claims
- 9Forskohlii root extract0 to 22 mg
- 10Bird pepper (capsicum) fruit extract0 to 20 mg
- 11Grapefruit seed extract0 to 18 mg
- 12Asian ginseng root extract0 to 17 mg
- 13Raspberry ketones0 to 15 mg
- 14L-glutamine0 to 14 mg
- 15L-tyrosine0 to 13 mg
- 16L-arginine0 to 12 mg
- 17Beta-alanine0 to 12 mg
- 18Monoammonium glycyrrhizinate (licorice)0 to 11 mg
- 19GABA0 to 11 mg
- 20L-ornithine HCl0 to 10 mg
- 21L-tryptophan0 to 9.5 mg
- 22L-carnitine0 to 9.1 mg
Blend ingredients are listed from heaviest to lightest (FDA, Labeling guide), so the ingredient in place k can weigh at most 200 ÷ k mg per serving. That is our math from the label, not a lab test. Chromium sits outside the blend with its own amount: 0.7 mcg.
Maca is first, so it must be at least the average, about 9 mg. Guarana sits third, so it is at most about 67 mg of extract; its caffeine is not printed. Gymnema is eighth, capped at 25 mg. By the bottom of the list, L-carnitine can be no more than about 9 mg.

How do blend amounts compare with doses used in research?
A ceiling only matters next to a reference dose. Daily figures assume the label's 1 mL twice daily.
| Ingredient (place) | Most per serving | Most per day | Dose named in research |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gymnema (8) | 25 mg | 50 mg | Typical dose 400 mg three times daily, 1,200 mg a day (LiverTox, Gymnema) |
| Forskohlii (9) | About 22 mg | About 44 mg | 500 mg a day in a small 12-week trial, which found no weight change (NIH ODS, Weight loss supplements) |
| L-carnitine (22) | About 9 mg | About 18 mg | 0.25 to 4 g a day in trials pooled in a 2023 review (NIH ODS, Carnitine) |
| Maca (1) | 9 to 200 mg | 18 to 400 mg | Therapeutic dose unknown (MSKCC, Maca) |
Even at their ceilings, these fall far below the research doses. The whole daily blend, 400 mg, is a third of gymnema's usual daily dose alone (LiverTox, Gymnema). More on each herb is on the ingredients page.
A fair view
Are proprietary blends a bad sign?
Not by themselves. But a blend shifts the work to you and makes claims hard to check.
What a blend label still gives you
- Every ingredient, named.
- The order by weight, so you can set ceilings.
- Separate amounts for nutrients like chromium.
What it holds back
- No single amounts, so no direct dose check.
- Caffeine sources, such as guarana, give no caffeine figure.
- Studies on the herbs may not match the dose inside.
The FTC says health claims should rest on studies that match the product's dose and formula (FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance). Marketing can drift further still: GlucoZen's brand graphics name ingredients its blend does not list, as the label versus marketing page shows.

Before you buy
What should you ask about any proprietary blend?
- What does each key ingredient weigh per serving?
- Was the finished product tested in people, at this dose?
- How much caffeine comes from any stimulant herbs?
- Do the ad's ingredients match the label's list?
Ask in writing and keep the reply.
FAQ
Proprietary blends: common questions
What does proprietary blend mean on a supplement label?
It means several ingredients are grouped under one name with one total weight. FDA rules require the blend's name, its total weight on the same line, and its ingredients listed from heaviest to lightest. The single amount of each ingredient is not shown.
How do you calculate the amount of an ingredient in a proprietary blend?
Divide the blend's total weight by the ingredient's place in the list. That gives the most it could weigh. In a 200 mg blend, the eighth ingredient is at most 25 mg. The real amount may be lower, but it cannot be higher.
Is the first ingredient in a blend always the largest?
Yes. Blend ingredients are listed in descending order by weight, so the first one weighs the most. It must also be at least the average. In GlucoZen's 200 mg blend of 22 ingredients, maca comes first, so it is at least about 9 mg.
Are proprietary blends legal?
Yes, when labeled correctly. FDA's labeling guide describes how a blend must appear: a name, a total weight and the ingredients in weight order. Nutrients with a Daily Value, such as chromium, must still be listed separately with their own amounts.
Can a vitamin or mineral be hidden in a proprietary blend?
No. FDA says ingredients with a reference daily intake, such as chromium, must be listed separately with their amounts. That is why GlucoZen shows chromium at 0.7 mcg on its own line, outside the 200 mg blend.
What is the most gymnema GlucoZen's blend could hold?
At most 25 mg per serving, because gymnema is eighth in a 200 mg blend. At 1 mL twice daily, that is 50 mg a day or less. LiverTox lists a typical gymnema dose of 400 mg three times daily, or 1,200 mg a day.
Can I ask a supplement company for the amounts in its blend?
You can ask, and it is worth doing in writing. For GlucoZen, product questions go to [email protected]. Without an answer, the label order still sets each ingredient's ceiling.
