Green Tea Extract in GlucoZen: How Much, Why, and the Liver Caution

Quick answer

GlucoZen lists Green Tea (Camellia sinensis) Leaf Extract seventh of 22 ingredients in its 200 mg blend. No amount is printed, but its place caps it at about 29 mg per 1 mL serving. It adds some caffeine, and concentrated green tea extracts are a known, rare cause of liver injury. No study has tested GlucoZen, or this amount, for blood sugar.

On the label

Where is green tea extract on the GlucoZen label?

Green tea is the seventh ingredient in GlucoZen's Proprietary Herbal Blend. The label calls it "Green Tea (Camellia sinensis) Leaf Extract" and gives no amount.

Blend ingredients must be listed from heaviest to lightest (FDA, Labeling guide). If green tea weighed more than 200 ÷ 7 mg, the six above it would outweigh the whole blend. So it can be at most about 29 mg per serving, or about 57 mg a day at 1 mL twice daily. That is our math from the label, not a lab test.

The real amount could be far lower, since the 15 ingredients below it could be tiny. Every line of the label is on the Supplement Facts page.

The basics

What is green tea extract, and what does the label leave out?

Green tea extract is a concentrate made from Camellia sinensis leaves. Its best-known compounds are catechins, mainly EGCG, which LiverTox considers the likely cause of the rare liver injuries tied to these extracts (LiverTox, Green tea). Green tea also contains caffeine (NCCIH, Green tea). Two extracts with the same name can differ a lot in strength, and GlucoZen's label gives no strength at all.

Why it is there

Why is green tea extract in GlucoZen?

The brand does not explain each ingredient. Here is what can be said fairly.

Brand view

A metabolism angle

Green tea is a common pick in products marketed for metabolism, and GlucoZen's marketing leans that way. The label front says only "Blood Sugar Support."

Evidence

Nothing tested here

No trial of GlucoZen has been published. The ADA's 2026 Standards say herb and spice supplements are not recommended for blood sugar benefit (ADA, Standards of Care 2026).

In practice

One small share

Green tea is one of 22 ingredients sharing 200 mg. Its role is likely minor, and its strength is unknown.

Compare it with the other herbs on the ingredients overview.

Caffeine

Which GlucoZen ingredients contain caffeine?

Two of them: guarana in third place and green tea in seventh. Tap spot 5 on the panel.

Tap a number to see what that line of the label means.

  1. Serving size

1 mL per serving, 60 servings per 2 fl oz bottle. At 1 mL twice daily, a bottle lasts 30 days.

  2. Chromium 0.7 mcg

The only printed amount: 0.7 mcg, 2% of the Daily Value. Twice daily is 1.4 mcg, about 4%.

  3. One 200 mg blend

Twenty-two ingredients share 200 mg, about 9 mg each on average. No single amounts are printed.

  4. Listed heaviest first

Maca, grape seed and guarana come first, so they are the largest shares of the blend.

  5. Caffeine sources

Guarana and green tea both contain caffeine. The caffeine amount is not printed.

  6. Gymnema

The herb most tied to blood sugar claims. Eighth in the list: at most 25 mg per serving.

  7. Ginseng and peppers

Bird pepper (capsicum), grapefruit seed and Asian ginseng, each a small share.

  8. Amino acids

Eight amino acids close the list: the smallest shares of the blend.

  9. Licorice compound

Monoammonium glycyrrhizinate, a licorice-derived sweetener with a blood pressure caution.

  10. Other ingredients

Water, organic citrus extract, natural flavors, stevia and xylitol. Xylitol is dangerous to dogs.

Guarana is the bigger source by position, at up to about 67 mg of extract per serving. The label prints no caffeine figure for either. FDA says 400 mg of caffeine a day is not generally linked to harmful effects for most adults, though people vary (FDA, Caffeine). If you are sensitive, count the drops as one more source. Liver safety

Can green tea extract hurt your liver?

Rarely, yes. LiverTox rates green tea extract as a well-established cause of clinically apparent liver injury, with more than 100 published cases, including liver failure, transplants and deaths (LiverTox, Green tea). NCCIH calls it uncommon and says most cases involve extracts sold as tablets and pills. People with a certain gene variant, carried by 5 to 15 percent of Americans, seem more likely to be affected (NCCIH, Green tea).

GlucoZen's share is small and liquid. Still, the sources name no safe amount and the strength is not printed, so the risk is probably low but not zero.

  1. Before you start

Tell your clinician about any liver disease or other green tea supplements.

  2. Months 1 to 6

Injury typically begins in this window after starting the product (LiverTox, Green tea).

  3. Any day

Know the warning signs below and act on them.

Signs to act on

Stop taking it and call a clinician if you notice dark urine, yellow skin or eyes, or belly pain.

Interactions

What other side effects and interactions does green tea extract have?

Beyond the liver, the main issues are stomach upset, blood pressure and two prescription drugs.

Tea vs extract

Is green tea extract the same as drinking green tea?

No. Liver reports center on concentrated extracts, mostly pills, rather than brewed tea (NCCIH, Green tea). GlucoZen's extract is a liquid of unknown strength.

Points in its favor

  • Named in full, with the plant and part used.
  • Seventh in the blend, so capped at about 29 mg.
  • A liquid, not the pill form behind most reports.

Open questions

  • No amount, strength or catechin content printed.
  • Caffeine content unknown, on top of guarana.
  • No study of this amount for blood sugar.

FAQ

Green tea extract in GlucoZen: questions

How much green tea extract is in GlucoZen?

The label does not say. Green tea is seventh of 22 ingredients in a 200 mg blend listed heaviest first, so it can be at most about 29 mg per 1 mL serving. The true amount may be much lower, and only the maker knows it.

Is the green tea in GlucoZen bad for your liver?

The risk is probably low, but not zero. Green tea extracts are a rare, well-established cause of liver injury, usually within 1 to 6 months. Stop and call a clinician for dark urine, yellow eyes or belly pain, and do not wait it out.

How much caffeine does green tea add to GlucoZen?

Only the maker knows, because the label prints no caffeine amount. Green tea and guarana both contain caffeine. If you limit caffeine, treat the drops as one more source and skip the evening serving if sleep suffers.

Does green tea extract help with blood sugar?

Not in a way that applies to this bottle. No study has tested GlucoZen, and the ADA's 2026 Standards say herb and spice supplements are not recommended for blood sugar benefit. Its amount here is small and of unknown strength.

Can I take GlucoZen if I drink green tea every day?

Many people could, but tell your clinician. Liver reports center on concentrated extracts, not brewed tea. The bigger concern is stacking several green tea supplements or lots of caffeine from coffee, tea and the guarana in the drops.

Does green tea in GlucoZen interact with medicines?

It might. NCCIH says green tea can lower blood levels of nadolol and atorvastatin, and extracts may raise blood pressure. Ask your prescriber before you start if you take either drug or a blood pressure medicine.

Is the green tea extract in GlucoZen decaffeinated?

The label does not say. It lists only Green Tea (Camellia sinensis) Leaf Extract, with no strength or caffeine figure. Ask [email protected] and get the answer in writing. Keep the label as your guide.
