Gymnema in GlucoZen: A Famous Herb in a Small Share

Quick answer

Gymnema leaf extract is eighth of 22 ingredients in GlucoZen's 200 mg blend, so each 1 mL holds at most 25 mg, or 50 mg a day. LiverTox lists a typical dose of 400 mg three times daily. Small trials found mild drops in fasting glucose, but gymnema has not been shown to treat diabetes.

The numbers

How much gymnema is in GlucoZen?

At most 25 mg per 1 mL serving. The label does not print the amount, but gymnema is eighth in a 200 mg blend that lists ingredients from heaviest to lightest (FDA, Labeling guide).

When an ingredient sits in place eight, it cannot outweigh the seven above it. So its share can be no more than 200 divided by 8, or 25 mg. The real figure could be much lower. At two servings a day, the ceiling is 50 mg.

Even the whole daily blend, all 22 ingredients together, weighs 400 mg. That is a third of gymnema's typical daily dose on its own.

Blend math

Where does gymnema sit in the GlucoZen blend?

Eighth of 22. Gymnema is the highlighted row lower in the list.

Blend ingredients are listed from heaviest to lightest (FDA, Labeling guide), so the ingredient in place k can weigh at most 200 ÷ k mg per serving. That is our math from the label, not a lab test. Chromium sits outside the blend with its own amount: 0.7 mcg.

Maca, grape seed and guarana come first, so they likely make up the biggest shares. Gymnema follows African mango, eleuthero, astragalus and green tea. Our guide to reading a proprietary blend explains the math step by step.

The herb

What is gymnema and why is it in GlucoZen?

Gymnema is a leafy herb, Gymnema sylvestre, used in Ayurvedic tradition. The GlucoZen label lists it as "Gymnema (leaf) extract (Gymnema Sylvestre)."

Supplement makers market it for blood sugar and sugar cravings. It is the blend ingredient most tied to blood sugar claims, which likely explains its place in a product labeled "Blood Sugar Support." That positioning is the brand's, not a finding about GlucoZen.

  • Part used: the leaf, as an extract.
  • Place on the label: 8 of 22 in the Proprietary Herbal Blend.
  • Extract strength: not printed, so the active content is unknown.

Research

Does gymnema lower blood sugar?

Not in a way that has been shown to treat diabetes. LiverTox reports that several small human trials found mild drops in fasting glucose, but overall effectiveness in treating diabetes has not been shown (LiverTox, Gymnema).

Gymnema is also not approved as therapy for any condition in the United States (LiverTox, Gymnema). And those small trials used their own doses, usually far more than 25 mg. Results at a typical dose do not tell you what a much smaller share will do.

The guideline view

The ADA's 2026 Standards of Care say herb and spice supplements are not recommended for blood sugar benefit (ADA, Standards of Care 2026). Gymnema falls in that group.

The brand's broader claims are weighed one by one on the claims and evidence page.

Liver

Can gymnema hurt your liver?

Rarely, it may. LiverTox gives gymnema a likelihood score of D, meaning a possible rare cause of clinically apparent liver injury (LiverTox, Gymnema).

The score rests in part on a case of a woman with type 2 diabetes who developed jaundice after drinking gymnema tea (LiverTox, Gymnema). Jaundice is a yellowing of the skin or eyes. One case does not prove gymnema caused it, but it is why the herb carries a liver flag.

Signs to act on

Stop taking any supplement and call a clinician if you notice yellow skin or eyes, dark urine or belly pain. GlucoZen also contains green tea extract, which carries its own liver flag (LiverTox, Green tea).

Medicines

Is gymnema safe to take with diabetes medication?

Ask first. Five questions show where to start.

Gymnema could add to the effect of diabetes medicines. The ADA warns that some supplement ingredients can intensify diabetes drugs and cause low blood sugar (ADA, Vitamins and supplements). Insulin, sulfonylureas and meglitinides carry the most risk of lows, below 70 mg/dL for many people (NIDDK, Hypoglycemia).

1. Are you under 18, pregnant or nursing?
2. Do you take insulin, a sulfonylurea (like glipizide) or a meglitinide?
3. Do you have high blood pressure, heart or kidney disease, or liver problems?
4. Are you hoping to replace a diabetes medicine with it?
5. Do you have a dog at home?

FAQ

GlucoZen gymnema FAQ

How much gymnema should you take a day?

LiverTox lists a typical dose of 400 mg three times daily, or 1,200 mg a day. That is a reference figure, not proof it works. GlucoZen holds at most 50 mg a day, and your clinician should guide any herb use.

Does gymnema stop sugar cravings?

That is a marketing claim, and the sources we cite do not support it. LiverTox describes small trials with mild drops in fasting glucose, not proven effects on cravings. No study has tested GlucoZen for cravings.

Can gymnema cause liver damage?

Rarely. LiverTox rates gymnema a possible rare cause of liver injury, citing a woman with type 2 diabetes who developed jaundice after gymnema tea. Stop and call a clinician for yellow skin or eyes or dark urine.

Is 25 mg of gymnema enough to work?

No study shows it is. Twenty-five mg is the most GlucoZen can hold per serving by label order, about a sixteenth of the 400 mg typical single dose. Small trials at higher doses showed only mild changes.

Is gymnema approved to treat diabetes?

No. LiverTox states that gymnema is not approved as therapy for any condition in the United States, and that its effectiveness in treating diabetes has not been shown. It is sold only as a supplement ingredient.

Where is gymnema listed on the GlucoZen label?

Eighth in the Proprietary Herbal Blend, as Gymnema (leaf) extract (Gymnema Sylvestre). It comes after green tea leaf extract and before forskohlii root extract. No amount is printed for it.
