Chromium for Blood Sugar: What the Doses on a Label Mean

Quick answer

Chromium is measured in micrograms (mcg), and the Daily Value is 35 mcg. Adults need about 25 to 35 mcg a day. GlucoZen lists 0.7 mcg per 1 mL, so the label's two servings give 1.4 mcg, about 4% of the Daily Value. Trials of chromium for glucose are inconsistent, and the ADA does not recommend it for blood sugar.

The full GlucoZen label laid flat, with the Supplement Facts panel on the right listing chromium 0.7 mcg
Chromium sits on its own line above the blend: 0.7 mcg per 1 mL serving, 2% of the Daily Value.

Units first

What does mcg mean on a chromium label?

Chromium is a trace mineral, so labels measure it in micrograms, written mcg. One microgram is a thousandth of a milligram, so the numbers are tiny by design.

That unit trips people up. A label that says 0.7 mcg is not 0.7 mg. It is a thousand times smaller than that. Always check the unit before you compare two products.

The second number to find is the percent Daily Value, or % DV. For chromium the Daily Value is 35 mcg (NIH ODS, Chromium). A % DV tells you how one serving compares with that reference amount.

Quick conversion

1 mg = 1,000 mcg. So 0.7 mcg = 0.0007 mg. Most chromium labels use mcg, which keeps the decimals readable.

Reference amounts

How much chromium do adults need?

NIH sets Adequate Intakes by age and sex. The Daily Value on labels is a single figure: 35 mcg.

Chromium Adequate Intakes for adults, per the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (NIH ODS, Chromium)
GroupAges 19 to 50Over 50
Men35 mcg a day30 mcg a day
Women25 mcg a day20 mcg a day
Label Daily Value35 mcg, used for every % DV figure

An Adequate Intake is a reference amount for everyday nutrition. It is not a dose meant to change blood sugar. That difference matters when a product is sold for glucose support.

Do the math

How do you turn a chromium serving into a daily dose?

Multiply the amount per serving by the number of servings the directions say to take each day. Then divide by 35 and multiply by 100 to get the daily % DV.

  1. Find the amount per serving

GlucoZen lists chromium (as chromium picolinate) at 0.7 mcg per 1 mL.

  2. Find servings per day

The label says 1 mL twice daily, so two servings.

  3. Multiply

    0.7 mcg x 2 = 1.4 mcg a day.

  4. Compare with 35 mcg

1.4 divided by 35 is 0.04, about 4% of the Daily Value.

The label itself prints 2% DV, which is per serving, not per day. It is an easy step to miss, so check whether a % DV is per serving.

Dose check

How big is GlucoZen's chromium dose next to the Daily Value?

The first bar shows chromium. The second puts the whole blend next to one herb's usual dose.

    (LiverTox, Gymnema)

Label amounts at the labeled 1 mL twice daily. The research figures are reference doses from NIH sources, not proof that any dose works.

The first bar is nearly empty: 1.4 mcg against 35 mcg. The second shows a related point. All 22 blend ingredients together come to 400 mg a day, a third of the 1,200 mg daily amount LiverTox lists for gymnema alone (LiverTox, Gymnema).

Both bars tell the same story. The doses in GlucoZen are small next to the reference amounts. More detail on the mineral itself is on the chromium ingredient page.

What studies show

Does chromium lower blood sugar in studies?

The results are inconsistent. A 2019 review of 58 trials found slight drops in fasting glucose and A1C, but their clinical meaning was unclear (NIH ODS, Chromium).

FDA allows only a qualified health claim about chromium and insulin resistance. That claim itself calls the link highly uncertain (NIH ODS, Chromium).

The American Diabetes Association goes further. Its 2026 Standards of Care say chromium, magnesium, herb or spice supplements are not recommended for blood sugar benefit. The text adds that without an underlying deficiency, such supplements show no benefit for people with diabetes (ADA, Standards of Care 2026).

The fair reading

Chromium is a real nutrient your body needs. Taking extra to manage blood sugar has weak support, and at 1.4 mcg a day GlucoZen's amount sits far below the reference intake.

Reading the label

Why does chromium get its own line on a supplement label?

FDA rules say nutrients with a reference intake, such as chromium, must be listed separately with their amounts. Only the other ingredients can be grouped into a proprietary blend (FDA, Labeling guide).

01

Amount shown

Chromium's 0.7 mcg is the only amount on GlucoZen's panel. The rule requires it.

02

Form shown

The label names the form: chromium picolinate, a mineral salt.

03

Blend hidden

The 200 mg blend lists 22 ingredients by weight order, with no single amounts.

So chromium is the one dose you can check exactly. The blend needs a different method, covered in how to read a proprietary blend.

Safety

Can chromium add to diabetes medicines?

It may. NIH notes that chromium may add to the glucose-lowering effect of insulin and other diabetes drugs, which raises the chance of low blood sugar (NIH ODS, Chromium).

The amount in GlucoZen is small. Small is still worth mentioning to the clinician who manages your diabetes, along with any other supplement you take.

Watch for lows

NIDDK treats a reading under 70 mg/dL as low for many people with diabetes. Shakiness, hunger, dizziness or confusion with a low reading need treatment right away (NIDDK, Hypoglycemia). Keep every prescribed medicine as directed.

Checklist

What should you check before buying a chromium product?

  • The unit: mcg, not mg.
  • Whether the % DV is per serving or per day.
  • How many servings the directions call for.
  • The form of chromium named on the label.
  • Whether chromium is the main ingredient or a small extra.
  • Any other supplement you already take that contains chromium.

For GlucoZen, the answers are simple: 0.7 mcg per serving, 2% DV per serving, two servings a day, chromium picolinate, and a small extra next to the blend. The full panel is typed out on the Supplement Facts page.

One 2 fl oz bottle holds 60 servings, which adds up to 42 mcg of chromium in total at 0.7 mcg each.

FAQ

Chromium dose questions

Is 1.4 mcg of chromium a day a lot?

No. It is about 4% of the 35 mcg Daily Value. Adults need about 25 to 35 mcg a day, depending on age and sex, according to NIH. GlucoZen's two daily servings of 0.7 mcg each add up to 1.4 mcg, a small share of that reference amount.

What is the difference between mcg and mg for chromium?

One milligram equals 1,000 micrograms. Chromium labels almost always use micrograms, written mcg, because the amounts are tiny. A label that lists 0.7 mcg contains 0.0007 mg. Always check the unit before you compare two chromium products or add them together.

Is the % DV on a supplement label per serving or per day?

It is per serving. If the directions call for two servings a day, double the % DV to see your daily share. GlucoZen prints 2% DV for chromium per 1 mL, so the label's twice-daily use gives about 4% of the Daily Value.

Does chromium picolinate help lower A1C?

The evidence is weak and mixed. A 2019 review of 58 trials found slight drops in fasting glucose and A1C of unclear clinical meaning, NIH reports. The ADA's 2026 Standards of Care do not recommend chromium supplements for blood sugar benefit in people without a deficiency.

How much chromium is in a full bottle of GlucoZen?

About 42 mcg in total. Each bottle holds 60 servings of 1 mL, and each serving lists 0.7 mcg of chromium. At the label's 1 mL twice daily, the bottle lasts 30 days and gives 1.4 mcg a day.

Can chromium cause low blood sugar with insulin?

It may add to the effect. NIH says chromium may increase the glucose-lowering action of insulin and other diabetes drugs, raising the risk of lows. Tell your clinician about every supplement, and treat any reading below 70 mg/dL with symptoms right away.

What is the Daily Value for chromium?

The Daily Value for chromium is 35 mcg. Supplement labels use it to calculate the percent Daily Value printed next to each nutrient. Adequate Intakes for adults range from 20 to 35 mcg a day, depending on age and sex, per NIH.
